My Bearded Dragon Shed It’s Skin & Won’t Eat

I wanted to touch on this question that I received via email yesterday.  The question was about a relatively young bearded dragon (although age really doesn’t matter in this case) that had just shed it’s skin.  The owner was afraid that the beardie might be very sick since he seemed lethargic, wouldn’t touch his food, and even refused it’s favorite treat… mealworms.

“Bearded Dragon Shed Skin, Won’t Eat” is how he put it.

Well my friend, you’ve got nothing to worry about.  All beardies get a bit lethargic after shedding their skin, and it’s not that your beardie WON’T eat, it’s that he doesn’t have the energy to.  Shedding the skin of a reptile is quite a labor-intensive process, and your bearded dragon pal just needs a little rest.   This could take anywhere from a few days, to a week and a half.  Rest asured though, all reptiles do this, not just beardies.

If your beardie is still refusing food in a week or so, then you can start to worry a little.  However, I wouldn’t be worried.  Hope this answers your question!
